Bethany Garland

Bethany is an Illustrator and Animator based in South Australia. They love to create dynamic, stylized creatures and characters for comics, illustration and animation. Currently they are working on their own original comic as they search for professional work in the 2D creative field.Bright colours and angular shapes are their favourite way to express themself, but they're never afraid to adopt a softer, more organic approach in order to convey the emotions and atmosphere of a project.Previously employed by Monkeystack and worked as an animator on YOLO: Crystal Fantasy.Graduated from University of South Australia with a Bachelor of Design (Illustration and Animation) in April 2023.

Title:
Extremely Human Not-So-Human At The End of EverythingArtist Statement:
This piece was designed to capture a specific kind of fleeting emotion. If I had to find words to describe it, they'd be intense, joyous, but also detached and fatalistic. I couldn't think of anything more human than intense emotions that seemingly make no sense.The dancing character was drawn very small in a pixel-art program, and then drastically scaled up and placed into a digital painting to create a subtle disconnect between the two. That disconnect becomes more noticeable the closer you are to the piece.It's a creature both living in the moment but not quite in the world.
